August is always bittersweet for me because we celebrate and remember the role of women in our lives, but it is a sad and reflective time because it is when I lost my beautiful Mamma.
Allow me, please, to take a few moments to remember my mamma - Rosa - the inspiration behind Graziella's Best Foods.
Mama came out to South Africa from Italy in the early 1960s...and worked as a seamstress - her skill in making clothes was astonishing! I remember pointing out a dress in a magazine - it wasn't long before I wore it!
She was the heart of our family, and everything she did was for us. This was evident in her ability to clothe and cook for us. Her passion and creativity were legendary.
Growing up in an Italian home meant there was always something creative cooking in the kitchen. The smells would leave you drooling. She loved to feed people with great Italian food. It wasn't long before she was teaching me. I treasure those times, and it is evident in my cooking still to this day - All my recipes and techniques are born from her instructions!
With Mamma in mind, I want to share one of her favourite Gnocchi dishes that she used to cook for us on cold winter nights, as it is a real comfort food and a time to gather your family and celebrate!

MAMMA ROSA'S BAKED CHORIZO GNOCCHI
Mamma Rosa used to make this delicious, rich meal in winter on any special occasion. She served it with crusty fresh Italian bread and basil from her herb garden, and the Adults always had a glass of red wine.
